Word Study
Scripture and Obedience

Purpose

Establish that the Bible is the inspired word of God.
Show that we should use the Bible as the standard for our lives.

Key Verse
2 Timothy 3:16-17
2 Timothy 3:16-17

The term "God-breathed" or "inspired" is used to describe the divine nature of biblical text. Why is the Bible useful?

These are the ways the Bible can be used (with original Greek words):

  • Teaching (didaskalian) – instruction; shows us what is right
  • Rebuking (elegmon) – reprimand/stronger correction; shows us what is wrong. Related to conviction about sin.
  • Correcting (epanorthosin) – helps turn the wrong into right.
  • Training in righteousness (paideian ten en dikaoisune) – establishes a discipline and a habit.
1 Timothy 4:16

Life and doctrine are both important (use analogies).
Why do we need to persevere in both life and doctrine?

Mark 7:1-13

What did Jesus find wrong with the practice of the Pharisees?
Why can traditions become harmful?
(Study leader may explain idea of "Corban".)

We should be careful not to allow religious traditions to replace the word of God as our standard.

Here the Bible is said to be like a sharp sword. Why?
What do you think "living and active " means?
What does the Bible do to the heart and mind?
Are you willing to believe and follow the Bible even when it hurts?

James 1:22-25

Here the Bible is likened to a mirror. Why?
How should we respond to the teachings contained in the Bible?
Why is it important to obey?

John 12:47-48

The Word will judge and determine our eternal destiny.

Acts 17:10-11

Who were called "noble" and why? How can you be a "Berean"?
